Credit has been flashing warning signs for weeks. Equities largely ignored them. That may now be changing.
Since early September, US high yield spreads have widened 55bp, from 300bp to 355bp.
Over the same stretch the S&P 500 is roughly flat.
Quant Insight’s model measures the link between the two directly, as equity beta to credit: how much of a credit-spread move the US stock cross-section actually prices in. Above 1 and equities amplify the move. Below 1 and they shrug it off.
The path of that beta is the story. In late August it hit a record 1.95. By 13 October it had collapsed to 0.52, the 7th percentile of its range.
Credit stress was building while equities grew steadily more indifferent to it.
Yesterday may have marked the turn.
Equities priced a credit shock of +3.2 standard deviations against an actual move of +1.7, almost double.
The reaction was sharpest in AI names: the model attributes a 2.6% decline in the AI basket to macro, while the market priced closer to 5.1%. When the reaction outruns the news, that is usually a sign of fragility rather than information.
It matters because AI is increasingly a credit story.
The build-out needs enormous capital.
More issuance, wider spreads and higher funding costs eventually press on capex assumptions, and with index leadership this concentrated, a credit problem becomes an equity problem.
Historically, equity sensitivity to credit rebounds sharply from depressed levels. But when spreads are already wide and still widening, that adjustment has tended to arrive alongside deeper equity drawdowns. The test to watch is whether beta climbs back above 1 while HY spreads keep pushing wider.
Is the market finally questioning the cost of funding the AI boom?
